I thought Jane's decision re: Rochester in the middle of the book was utterly commendable. A character named Julia makes a similar honor-before-passion in Brideshead Revisited.

Your comments about Jane seeing repose in Nature made me think of heir friend at Lotown, Helen Burns, and her transparent Stoicism. The Stoics often referred to their path as obeying Nature.Stephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15097908023032528200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980951139270141970.post-58409236654811068082016-04-18T06:47:46.710-05:002016-04-18T06:47:46.710-05:00Hi Stephen – Thanks for stopping by my blog.

This is such an impressive novel and Jane is such an impressive character, for all the reasons that you mention. In addition I thought that there were a lot of underlying big ideas with all sorts of profound implications explored.
Brian Josephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15139559400312336791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980951139270141970.post-11937532600786218112016-04-12T15:10:10.294-05:002016-04-12T15:10:10.294-05:00Oh, I really struggled with S&S and consider i...Oh, I really struggled with S&S and consider it by far my least favourite Austen novel. For me its P&P, Persuasion and then Emma. The other two are still TBR.CyberKittenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06394155516712665665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980951139270141970.post-49617335210958668252016-04-11T19:10:40.450-05:002016-04-11T19:10:40.450-05:00Oh, I like Jane much better than anything I've...Oh, I like Jane much better than anything I've read in Austen. Charlotte Bronte's writing was more accessible to me than Austen. Honestly, I don't know many times I had to read through the first paragraph or two of "Sense and Sensibility" for that family tree to make sense. (After that it's fairly easy, but grief -- what a beginning!)

@ R.T. I hope to make the literary acquaintance of Emily Bronte at some point. Perhaps she'll feature next April! She's a great character equal in many ways to the best of Jane Austen. I enjoyed Jane Eyre a great deal more than I was expecting too considering that it was essentially a Victorian love story.CyberKittenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06394155516712665665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980951139270141970.post-91670975161587710692016-04-11T09:23:44.372-05:002016-04-11T09:23:44.372-05:00Stephen, if I could time-travel, I would very much...Stephen, if I could time-travel, I would very much enjoy meeting the Bronte sisters. I cannot imagine a more interesting encounter with writing siblings.RTDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17113953356514605424noreply@blogger.com
